What is collected
You do not need an account to read anything here, and I never ask for your name or your address. Basic anonymized analytics may be gathered: which pages were read, a rough geographic region, the type of device and browser, and the site you arrived from. I use that to see which pieces are worth writing more of, and for nothing else.
Email you send me
If you write to me, your message and your address sit in my mailbox for as long as it takes to answer and to keep a record of any correction. Writing to me does not put you on the letter described below; that only happens if you ask for it.
The letter, and how the subscribe box actually works
There is a short letter that goes out every couple of weeks, and a box on this site where you can ask to receive it. That box is not connected to a marketing platform. It is a plain mailto form: when you press Subscribe, your own email program opens with a message addressed to [email protected], and nothing is sent until you send it yourself. Your address therefore arrives in the same private mailbox as any other email, and I keep the list of addresses there.
Because of that, no third party sees your address, there is no tracking pixel in the letter, and I cannot tell whether you opened it. To stop receiving it, reply to any letter, or write to [email protected] with the word stop, and I will take your address off and delete it.
Cookies
The site uses a small number of cookies for basic function and analytics. You can block or clear them in your browser whenever you like and everything here will still work normally.
Third parties
Some outbound links are affiliate links, explained on the affiliate disclosure page. The retailers and networks you click through to have their own privacy practices, which I do not control. Images are served from this site; where any embedded content is used, the article says so.
Children
This site is written for adults and is not directed at children under 13. I do not knowingly collect information from them.
Your choices
I do not sell personal information. If you live in California, or anywhere with comparable rules, and you want to know what is held about you or want it deleted, write to [email protected] and I will deal with it myself.
